Are You Training Enough?

Elite athletes

  • train average of 23 hours a week and about 4-5 hours a day
  • practice to game ratio 5:1 to 10:1
  • includes physical, technical & tactical (sport specific) and mental preparation training

Competitive athletes

  • train 6-20 hours a week depending on the dedication level, province, coaching expertise and available facilities.
  • practice to game ratio 3:1 to 5:1.
  • includes physical, technical & tactical (sport specific) and mental preparation training

Recreational athletes

  • don’t train, they play seasonally
  • practice to game ration 1:1 to 2:1
  • This is a sustaining program – there is generally no improvement in this sort of program other than natural progression due to repetition and physical growth.

These statistics are national standards. In NS we generally fall into the low end of these statistics. This is due mostly because of a simple misunderstanding of what it really takes to be good at your sport. We need to think nationally and not provincially in our standards to be competitive against others athletes in Canada.

What are your goals? Do you want to be competitive? Are you recreational? Once you establish this then you need to adjust your training schedule and regime.
